As you may know our Limestone Coat was originally created as a cool-weather layering option. The cropped sleeve on this coat was a purposeful design choice and we saw many beautiful versions created with some really chic outfit layering. Of course it still came as no surprise that people also started asking for a full sleeve option as the weather cooled even more.
This past spring Sharon, from Prarie Love Knits fabric company, brought up the idea of Limestone and a full sleeve again. She had a vision for a jacket and quilt combo and wondered if we would combine Miss Limestone with her Daystar Quilt pattern in some way. She also asked about the option for a sleeve.
With newfound excitement for an artistic project we decided to draft the sleeve and create the coat. Sharon sent us some gorgeous forest green wool, a selection of quilting cottons and the pattern for her quilt. We used Adobe Illustrator to map out our project plan and then enjoyed making the vision come to life!
In keeping with the coat’s style these sleeves are slightly oversized and cozy. A cuff with optional trim in either (or both) seams finishes it off nicely.
You can choose to line your sleeve or not – but whatever choice you make it MUST be the same one you made for the main coat. The cuff, however, MUST be lined. Feel free to choose the same lining as the coat, a different complimentary lining, or even the main fabric (so the lining fabric remains unseen in the sleeve opening).
Since the Limestone Coat is already oversized there is some extra grade in the cropped sleeve already. In order to counter-act that and have every size end up at the wearer’s upper hand I did need to gradually remove some grade from the sleeve itself. This is why you may notice that the add-on gets shorter as the size increases. I promise, we DO measure all our pattern pieces and make sure they match up with what our size chart is telling you will fit! Just follow the instructions for measuring your total arm length and compare to the size chart to see if you need to add/remove any more length for your arm.
You can check arm length as follows (this info is also in the tutorial): Measure the distance from the cervicale vertebrae at the base of the neck (Fig. 1) over the top of the shoulder joint, along the outside of the arm, over the elbow to the prominent wrist bone, taken with the arm bent 90° and the hand placed on the hip (Fig. 2). Add or remove sleeve length based on how this measurement compares to the size chart.
Finally, let’s take a look at some of the gorgeous coats our testers created with the new full sleeve! First up are the up-cycles (such a great idea for a pattern that otherwise requires a larger amount of fabric):

We hope you’ve been inspired to try out the new long sleeve option for Miss Limestone for yourself!
